I TOLD you I was getting 10 . . . 12 . . . 14 inches!

snowy night

Last Saturday night, we took LG out for her first ever "walk in the snow at night." She thought this was incredibly cool, to go walking the sidewalks in the dark. There is a particular feel and flavor to the silence of a night-time snowfall. I don't know how to say just how thrilled I was that she "got" it. She said later, "the best part was the sound, except there wasn't any sound, but it sounded so cool." Absolutely, baby.

our house in snow

While I strolled, contemplating high, holy thoughts ("the woods are lovely, dark and deep," "silent snow, secret snow"), the less refined among us pelted me with snowballs. Paybacks will be forthcoming. The Light in the Window is our house as we returned.

paper snowflakes 2

I was the first one downstairs in the morning. This shot is through our back door, sliding glass door from the kitchen. All winter, we've had these wonderful paper snowflakes on it, courtesy of LG. I love this, looking through the paper snow to the real snow.

And then I opened the door . . .

playhouse snow

And looked around. BTW, these shots ARE all in color.

biscuit and snowman

Later, there was work to do. Snowman-making. Note his eyes. His eyes are made of dog treats!

sniffing the snowman

Which made Biscuit particularly appreciative of his beauty, and his scent . . .

attack

Until finally, Biscuit's passions overcame him, and he could resist no longer!

one-eyed snowman

OH NO, MR. SNOWMAN!

guilty

There is no shortage of forensic evidence on the perp's furry face. Guilty as charged with crimes against snomanity.

Hey! LG took all the snowman photos! Great work, baby girl.

42 heads are better than one . . .

What simply GORGEOUS snow pictures you posted! I love them all! The night ones make me feel like I'm walking along with you and LG.

Poor Biscuit... hey, Sweet Pea has a stuffed dog named Biscuit! She calls him "Bick-it", though.

Blogger Unknown said...

WILLIAM! This snowman was made by LG and her FAMILY... how can you even bring up such an idea?! For shame...

Blogger Unknown said...

Wha? How did that happen? I saw William's comment, then my reply posted above his comment...

I'm going to get some cocoa before this gets any weirder...

Blogger WILLIAM said...

Wow. all of those pictures are awesome. I am slightly disappointed that the snowman did not have any Pom Pom's in the nether region.

The snow...Susie...its all yours. I wish a 40" storm to satisfy your search for Mid-atlantic novelty. Send your weather up here ok! Actually, its already here, it has been in the fifty's the last couple of days.

All the same cool pics and really cool looking dog. Sheepdog?

ck, apparently, you are trying desperately to remain "on top." This, and the whole "pom pom" thing are something you and william are going to have to work out :p

Yea, get us all some cocoa . . . it WILL get weirder . . .

hippo, I'm satisfied now, thanks. Biscuit is mostly cockapoo, but he's too big to be a cockapoo, so maybe some Wheaton Terrier, or some kind of terrier, too. Or maybe we just feed him too much. When we remember to feed him at all :)

The VBD pics totally crack me up. Especially the last one of his guilty mug.

And the other shots are beautiful. Have a great day, Susie!

Blogger Unknown said...

Oh, how I miss seeing the snow at night. *sigh* - I could almost hear the nothing too.

OK the snowman/dog liaison? THAT was quite cool. I'm so glad you caught that in photos.

verification word: lfcksgd. Too easy. Even for me.

Blogger MrsDoF said...

Great Snow pictures. Rosie O put some on her flickr, too.
Better you folks than me to be shoveling out.
We are getting rain today. Just as much moisture for the ground, but no shovels involved.
VBD Biscuit looks guilty but satisfied.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

That is the cutest photo of Biscuit the VBD that I've seen yet! And I also love the paper snowflakes shot.

Sounds like you thoroughly enjoyed the 14 inches, Susie. ;)

*pout*

I wish we had snow. It keeps turning spring here and then turning right back to winter, without the snow. Sucks. Today it's going to be 64 freaking degrees. My son is wearing SHORTS.

And then tomorrow it's going to be 33.

I hate Southern Ohio weather.

Blogger eviluncledave said...

I lived in the mountains for a while and when the snow would fall at night all the lights in the valley would reflect off the clouds and make the sky turn pink. I used to love listening to the sound of the snow falling in the half-light.

And I hope that the snowman doesn't decide to press charges....

Blogger Nina said...

Thanks for the smile this morning I really needed it . . . I mean I really did. I loved the eyes and Biscuit eating them. LG photos are wonderful, she did a great job.

Blogger Susie said...

sharkey, yea, he was so busted! You have a great day, too :)

kristine, well, our snow was brand new here. I like "Grover." Biscuit's tail is docked, unfortunately, that was before we got him.

jim, you crack me up. *gasp* I can't believe this:

ifkbtr

:0

mrsDoF, that Rosie, she's always over here, all about, 'what's Susie doing...' She needs to get a life. Guilty but satisfied. That sounds good, actually ;)

kalki, yea, I wouldn't want that much EVERY day, if you know'm sayin', but yea . . .

candace, well, that's just wrong, honey. I'm sorry it's that way :(

eud, are you flirting with me, kid, because that sounds so romantic . . . like some rooster reading poetry to me . . .

MEAN Shoshie,
Next time there's the threat of 14 inches here, I'm gonna need someone to:

Rescue me
Oh take me in your arms
Rescue me
I want your tender charms
'Coz I'm lonely and I'm blue
I need you and your love too

Come on and rescue me
Come on baby and rescue me
Come on baby and rescue me
'Coz I need you, by my side
Can't you see that I'm lonely
Rescue me

Come on and take my heart
Take your love and conquer every part
'Coz I'm lonely and I'm blue
I need you and your love too

Come on and rescue me
Come on baby and rescue me
Come on baby and rescue me
'Coz I need you by my side
Can't you see that I'm lonely

Rescue me
Oh take me in your arms
Rescue me
I want your tender charms
'Coz I'm lonely and I'm blue
I need you and your love too
Come on and rescue me
Come on baby, take me baby, hold me baby, love me baby
Can't you see that I need you baby
Can't you see that I'm lonely
Rescue me

Come on and take my hand
Come on baby and be my man
Cuz I love you cuz I want you
Can't you see that I'm lonely?
take me baby
love me baby
need me baby
Can't you see that I'm lonely?

rescue me, rescue me.......

I'm so glad there are other crazy white people who like to pretend they're Motown divas :)

nina alright, missy, I'm coming over to see whassup with you. And it your blog doesn't tell me, email?

Blogger Andrea said...

Is that an OLYMPIC BERET I see on that snowman's head? I am jealous! I don't even have any idea how to get one around here (short of eBay, and yes, I did look, but decided if it's not available as an impulse buy in person, it's not meant to be...sigh.)

Blogger Judypatooote said...

Those pictures are beautiful, I love the night ones.....and
Biscuit does look guilty.....

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I was thinking....these are such beautiful pictures, and I love the black and white effect. Then I read, they're all in color!! WOW.

Geesh, 14 inches is HUGE, I mean, um, alot.

Blogger Annejelynn said...

I have nothing more to say than my usual.... you guys ARE SOOO CUTE!!!

Blogger Philosophical Karen said...

I liked the patio door picture. Last fall I had to purposely cover my patio doors in little paper silhouettes of birds because otherwise real birds would fly into it and stun themselves. There was one I thought was dead, but it slowly woke up, checked itself out, deemed itself okay, then flew off again. I kinda know how it feels sometimes.

Blogger Squirl said...

EUD mentioned the pink skies. I see those a lot in the winter living in the city. Tonight it's been thunderstorms. But it's supposed turn to freezing rain and then snow. But I don't think I'll be getting 14 inches.

Blogger Ern said...

Beautiful snow. *sigh*

I love the snowman pics too. Does Biscuit come inside and spend 10 minutes biting the snowballs off his fur? :)

(SLC Olympics represent! I'm totally not getting the new beret because they are uggo!)

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good job, LG!
But, Susie, that first photo of the tree in the night takes my breath away.

Blogger Susie said...

andrea, it is, but it's an old one, from 2002 :)

thanks, judyp :)

lawbrat, yea, it was overcast, and early, and I guess the world was just shades of gray. 14" is really too, too much ;)

annejelynn, and as I always say, YOU would know cute ;)

karen, that is a lovely image. I mean the paper birds, not you knowing the feeling. I do empathize with that, though. In fact, I'm pretty sure I've done quite the same thing a few times recently.

squirl, I liked eud's word picture . .. I don't know that I've seen pink skies with snow. I'd like to.

ern, yes, Biscuit does struggle with the snow mats. I do like the new berets, I'd like a red one; I haven't tried to track one down, yet though.

sheryl, how much do I love you right now? I've had a tough evening; your saying that, YOUR saying that about my pic, well, I can go to bed happy :)

Blogger Girl.A said...

Dude, this post totally doesn't live up to the hype. Wack.

The SNOWMAN aint even sportin no INCHES! You call that nub a carrot!?!

Blogger Kranki said...

Holy SMOKES! Look at the snow! I love the photos. We are cold here tonight as well but only clear skies. No snow for us. I love snow.

Blogger August95 said...

That is some serious snow Susie. Hey look at all those S words lol. Anyways, you took some beautiful pictues, so did LG.

Poor cookie eyed snowperson.

Blogger Susie said...

girl.a, you're the one who got here by searching "snow porn," aren't you? It's a tricky thing, that snow porn. What happens when a snowman gets hot?

kranki, aw, I wish I could send you some. Today we're up to 60 degrees. I think it will all be gone :(

august, yea, say that 5 times fast! I like "cookie-eyed snow person." :)

Blogger Amy said...

Beautiful! And you are right, there is nothing like that quiet crunch of snow under your feet and the still night air. You can't help but feel peace.

Blogger Susie said...

MEANshoshie, yes, send me your kids, I will be mean to them so they will feel right at home :p We're having a birthday party here this weekend, so make sure they bring nice gifts :) Thank you for the song, it really made me laugh this morning. Now, missy, it apparently takes a few minutes for a comment to show up, but I did see your other comment in email, and I LIKED it. I could be Jewish in that respect: I say if you're MEAN to someone, you must apologize directly to them. This mess of just saying "sorrreeee" to God? FERCOCKT that! That's what I say. You have to do both! (How'd I do, with the "fercockt?" Is it as versatile as its English counterpart? I mean, can it be noun, verb, curse, request, adjective (-ing)?)

amy, yea, I wish you could bottle that feeling. Or maybe they have . . . Xanax, maybe?

I had to come back to study the snowflakes on glass and snow in yard photo. That is one artsy shot and tells so much about what's important at your house.
Today is sunny and clear blue skies and temperature in the low 'teens. DoF took a picture of the thermometer outside our kitchen window to verify the coldness of the prairie because it sure Looks like nice weather.

Blogger Susie said...

mrsDoF, that's a very meaningful compliment, thank you. I know someone who has four kids and she considers it a high compliment when someone tells her that they "can't even tell children live in her house," meaning everything is in order, only tasteful, grown-up stuff is evident. I would be insulted by what she considers a compliment. We waited 13 years to get a kid in our house. We enjoy every sign that she's here :) I'm a little mushy about such things, mrsDoF; my baby is turning 10 in a few days :)

Blogger MrsDoF said...

Get Mushy all you want. My third 'baby' will be 21 next month. Pictures and origami and warm memories are what keep me pressing onward. Although I can't say I'm ready for grandchildren yet ;)

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Great pictures! I don't blame Biscuit a bit.

Blogger DCK said...

are you sure these were color shots??? they're just genious.
And very artistic... LG is well on her way to become a world renowned photographer... Like Gil Ben- Simone (or something like).

Blogger hemlock said...

I want snow like that. So so jealous.

Blogger OldHorsetailSnake said...

Biscuit steals the day. Is "precious" the wrong word?

Blogger Katy Barzedor said...

Biscuit is an eye plucker. For shame.

And don't you hate it when the ten inches you were promised turn into 14? Ridiculous, even for me, Caverna.

Blogger Susie said...

nikki, shoshie is welcome to come and visit for a week. I'll take good care of her, and keep her safe. She will provide me with the excuse I've been needing to order the Time-Life Soul Ballads collection. We will sing our crazy faces off, and not be mean at all.

julie, HI! Nice to see you :) You know, if someone made a snowman with my favorite treats for eyes, I'd probably do the same thing :)

twixie, thank you. Yep, that's the color the world was that morning, apparently.

leafgirl77, don't be jillis anymore, it's mostly all gone now :(

hoss, precious is a perfectly useful word, but no, not for Biscuit. He's bad and he stinks.

shoshie, I mean NICE shoshie, of course Nikki is allowed here! That wasn't nice! I will be very good to your babies. But, as Nikki suggested, maybe you should come for a while. We'll sing soul ballads. For hours. Please, shoshie? No one here will sing them with me. I never had sisters to have a girl group with :(

bucky, it's the old "too much of a good thing," we've all heard of, but most of us have never actually seen :)

Blogger Candy said...

Um I am shocked that no one seems to be alarmed by the dog on snowman violence here. Susie, I hate to tell you this, but I think Biscuit may have a snow person agression problem.

This might not seem like much now, but just wait until he starts attacking your neighbors snow people and the angry calls start flooding in.

You need to get him to dog/snow person sensitivity training before its too late and the carrot noses and treat eyes and torn bellies of snow people litter your front yard like some kind of sick Jack Frost massacre.

Blogger Susie said...

shoshie!, I would never tell you HELL! I'll tell you, BWI or Dulles. And then I'll tell you what you started at my house this morning:

Susie: Alright, Shoshie's coming to visit for a week.
Jif: MEAN Shoshie?!
Susie: She won't be mean. And she'll cook for us.
Jif: OK.
Susie: And she's bringing the CDs!
Jif: What CDs?
Susie: The Time-Life Soul Ballads collection, of course . . . so we can SING!
Jif: I don't know . . .
LG: Who is MEAN Shoshie?
Susie: She's not really mean . . .
Jif: She's mama's sister . . .
LG (looking very worried): But mama doesn't have a sister . . .
Susie: You better THINK! (think!) Think about what you're trying to do to me . . .
LG (taking Jif's hand): Um, Daddy, can I speak to you in the kitchen?

heeheeee, see what you did? They're going to PUT ME AWAY, Shoshie. Then you can come and visit me in the nut hut. I'll bet they have karaoke there . . . bring the CDs . . .
